In our day of brutal child abuse, spanking has become an intensely controversial subject. There are many professionals who strongly advise against it, no matter how defiant a youngster may be. It is viewed by others as an absolute last resort—the final act of exasperation and frustration, following threats, hand-wringing, tears, and bargaining. We need, however, to hear from God’s Word. We need to be able to approach this subject with confidence rather than with confusion and insecurity. We must think in terms of what the Lord, rather than humanity, advises. But in it all, we must understand the value of wisdom so that we pursue the shaping of a will rather than the crushing of a spirit. There is an enormous difference.
