All children are born with good and bad “bents.” The good, according to the Scriptures, is God’s design—everything from how we are made physically to the way we are put together emotionally and intellectually, including our gifts, interests, and abilities. The bad, generally speaking, is our Adamic bent—our sinful nature that came from Adam. The good needs to be cultivated; the bad, counteracted. Specific evil tendencies and weaknesses are passed on from our parents, which were not curbed in them or in their parents. For this chain reaction to be broken, some firm and diligent effort by parents must be exerted.
