Rarely do we find more o fa walking contradiction in terms than in Simon Peter. The "Rock," as Jesus named him, walked on water, yet cowered at the sight of a storm. He publicly proclaimed Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God," but later denied knowing Him. He slashed his sword at hardened soldiers when they came to take Jesus away, but then scurried away in fear after a slave girl recognized him as one of Christ's followers.
Peter's passions and quick tongue often got him into trouble. At times he was astute, at others obtuse. Courageously loyal, yet frequently cowardly. A glowing success...and a dismal failure. However, when we turn to 1 Peter 1:1, we don't read "Peter, the man who turned his back on his best friend," or "Peter, the man who denied Christ." We simply read, "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ." This tainted, fallible human being found hope beyond grievous failure. He great to become the Rock, a loyal apostle and follower of Christ.
