Never-to-Be-Forgotten Promises, CD message

Charles R. Swindoll

Unlike most individuals, governments, and institutions in the world, God keeps His word. He doesn’t forget His promises. He doesn’t back out of agreements. He doesn’t break contracts. He doesn’t renege on covenants. Though He may not fulfil His promises according to our human timetables, we can always count on this: God’s character is marked by veracity and integrity. When God promised to accomplish specific things for certain individuals and people groups in biblical times, those promises were inviolable. God’s unconditional promises to a man named Abram stand as an enduring example of God’s faithfulness to His own word. In this message, we’ll explore the details of that promise, which became the basis for blessings that continue to be experienced in part today and will one day be completely fulfilled.

When we’re waiting on the Lord to fulfil His promises, we can be encouraged by thinking of Abram. At age 75, he received a call and promises from God. But not until Abram turned 100 did God finally begin to bring some aspects of those promises to fruition through the birth of Isaac. And by the time Abram departed this world, he had not yet received everything God had promised. But Abraham learned—as we must also learn—that the final fulfilment of God’s promises transcend this earthly journey. As the author of Hebrews said, “Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God” (Hebrews 11:10).
