In reading John's account of the crucifixion, we're faced with an undeniable example of our Lord's humanity. Being truly human, existing in bodily form, the God-Man experienced a common bodily need: He became thirsty. Christ had been hanging on the cross since nine o'clock in the morning; it is now approaching three o'clock in the afternoon. He has been suffering the agony of the crucifixion for nearly six hours. Now, out of the darkness, He utters a fifth, very human, statement about revealing an intensifying of His physical suffering: “I am thirsty.”
