Jesus' final words came from Psalm 31:5, “Into Thy hand I commit my spirit.” His final words were appropriate not only because His work was done, but also because death must be given permission. It is the Lord of life who gives up His life. And in so doing, He commits Himself to the Father, calmly, quietly, confidently. In uttering the familiar words of this lovely Jewish prayer from the Psalms, He releases His spirit as He breathes His last. Mercifully, the excruciating pain will cease. Death will come as a welcome, invited guest.
