Having followed the Lord's command to “write the things which you have seen” (Revelation 1), John now turns to “the things which are” (Revelation 2 and 3). In doing so, he addresses the seven churches listed in Revelation 1:11.
One by one, John records Christ's evaluation of each local assembly of believers, beginning with Ephesus. Before we focus on that particular church, we observe the overall pattern repeated again and again as each church is brought under the Lord's scrutinizing eye.
Following that general analysis, we want to discover from Revelation 2:1-7 what He thought of the church at Ephesus and then what we can learn today from that first-century church's strengths, weaknesses, and warnings.
