After 13 years of silence, during which Abram had to learn to wait on God’s timing, the Lord finally appeared with changes and challenges. God changed Abram’s and Sarai’s names to Abraham and Sarah, instituted the mark of circumcision, and extended promises that would make any level-headed person laugh in disbelief.
Yet Abraham’s faith and obedience reflected a man who had cultivated deep roots in his relationship with God. The Patriarch’s time in silence wasn’t wasted. Through his example, we can learn how to quiet ourselves, listen to God’s voice, overcome doubts, and step out in obedience.
