Uzziah's father was murdered, resulting in Uzziah's assuming the throne at age 16. The crown must have weighed heavy on his young brow as thoughts of his father's ghastly death and worries of the kingdom pressed down on him. Uzziah wielded the royal scepter in Judah during the divided kingdom period in Jewish history. Under Saul, David, and Solomon, the people had been united; but Solomon's son Rehoboam harshly treated the Jews in the north, causing a north-south split.
