There at an ancient place called Mount Gilboah, a tall and handsome king in battled array fell alongside his sons who all died in that battle as Israel fought their ancient enemy Philistia and how the Philistines must have paraded the victory over the Hebrews.
When the news of Saul reached David, Saul’s successor, it broke David’s heart. And even though Saul had made David’s life miserable for a dozen or more years, David set aside all of that as he remembered, It is right to honour the king. And so in his mind David returned to Mount Gilboah and with skill and sensitivity he wrote a eulogy in the form of a song of lament.
